Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered was released on Oct. 31st. You could download the update for $10 if you already own the game. The main question circulating has been, “Is it worth the $10?”. But the question people should be really asking is, “What’s up with the teeth?”
Horizon Zero Dawn was released alongside the PS4 in 2017. It has aged beautifully – the graphics, gameplay, and story hold up nicely. So nicely that many question why remaster it at all. At least it wasn’t full-price like the The Last of Us remaster – an equally questionable choice.
Most of the updates made by the team at Nixxes were related to making more realistic foliage and terrain, creating more immersion with NPCs, and a boost to motion capture.
The motion capture in question is where things went horribly wrong – with the teeth that is. Die-hard Nil fans were some of the first to post about it on Reddit. Known for being As one user said, “Just completed the first bandit camp this moment and could not get over his huge and uniform teeth.” Another suggested it was probably a bug that should be reported.
Mark Bazelmans, Senior Technical Artist at Nixxes, shared:
“We created a tool with Python to process the almost 2500 mocap files that Guerrilla provided to replace the original animation in the conversations, removing deprecated events and replacing those with the mocap and setup.“
It seems like somewhere in the process of replacing original animations with motion capture files, many characters (mainly male) appear to have lost the control and volume of their upper lips – leaving large, glaring, uniform teeth on display throughout conversations. Oddly, the lower jaw continues to move, making for an overall unpleasant experience.
Since release day, the Horizon Zero Dawn remaster has seen a patch or two, so hopefully they’ll do something about those chompers soon!
